The new League of Legends World Championship format explained.

For any prospective LoL Esports bettor out there, it's super important to understand the brand-new format of the game's premier tournament. After a decade of stability, Riot decided to shake things up and completely revamped the way the tournament plays out, adding tons of intrigue and even more excitement to an already mouthwatering mix of action. Both the qualifying stage and the group stage have been changed for the 2023 edition of the League of Legends World Championship, and we will detail the new versions below. Notably, Naafiri will be disabled for the tournament since it wasn't available for all four top regions' playoff brackets heading into the event.
It all begins with a best-of-five series.

What are the World's Qualifying Series 2023?

In 2023, Worlds will begin with an added marquee matchup in the form of the Qualifying Series, featuring the fourth seed of the LEC, Team BDS, and the fourth seed from the LCS, the Golden Guardians. They will battle it out in an all-important best-of-five match to secure the final qualification spot for the Play-in Stage. This series is a new addition to the tournament, and Riot has stated its intention to expand it to feature further teams in the future. The Worlds Qualifying Series for 2023 will take place on October 9.

Next up is the usual Play-in Stage, set to take place across two rounds at an as-of-yet-unannounced date, but sometime before October 19. This year, eight teams divided into two groups will battle it out in the first round of the Play-in Stage. It features a double-elimination format with best-of-three matches, with the top two of each group advancing to the second round.
The second round of the Play-in of each Stage features the four teams from the previous round that qualified, with the upper bracket winner group playing against the lower bracket winner of the other group. These will be best-of-five matches, with the two winners advancing to the Swiss Stage.

Swiss Stage in League of Legends Worlds: The 2023 format

The revamped group stage of Worlds 2023 features a Swiss system, a format where teams are seeded based on their win-loss record after the initial round. Controversially, all matches bar the elimination and advancement matches are best-of-one, with the critical series being best-of-three.
This is very different from the previous years' double round-robin format, which negated most of the variance from the best-of-one games. From a bettor's perspective, this means larger upset potential in the early rounds, and as the ensuing butterfly effect inevitably wreaks havoc on the seeding, pitting favorites against one another earlier than expected, with an inevitable impact on the playoffs as well.
The teams with a 3-win record (3-0, 3-1, or 3-2) will advance to the knockout stage, and those with 3 losses (0-3, 1-3, 2-3) will be eliminated.
The Swiss Stage of League of Legends Worlds 2023 will take place in two chunks, first October 19-23, then October 26-29.

Finally, the meat and potatoes of the whole affair. After the competition's been whittled down to the final eight, the real action will begin to emerge. The ultimate showdown of ultimate Esports destiny is a single-elimination bracket, where every match will be a best-of-five affair, culminating in the eventual grand final, where the two strongest teams will battle it out for the glory.
The knockout stage matches will take place on November 2-5, November 11-12, with the grand final set to take place on November 19.

Shockingly, last year's champions, DRX, failed to qualify for Worlds this time around, but with the caveat that four of the five title winners had left the squad by that time, making it the first time that Cho "BeryL" Geon-hee missed out on the marquee competition in his professional career.
